Who We Are
Protect Our Manoomin began as a vision of an Anishinaabe'kwe from northern Minnesota who became alarmed at the potential destruction of manoomin resulting from sulfate contamination. In February 2011, her vision resulted in the development of a Facebook group to bring awareness of the issue of manoomin and the impact sulfate/hydrogen sulfide on manoomin stands. In May, ten individuals who were central to the group established a council and formed Protect Our Manoomin as an unincorporated organization. The Protect Our Manoomin Council includes Anishinaabe members from the Mississippi Ojibwe, Red Lake Ojibwe, Sandy Lake Ojibwe, Rice Lake Ojibwe, Fond du Lac Ojibwe, Pembina Ojibwe, and White Earth Ojibwe. The foundation of our organization is based on the principals and values of our elders. Our voice is one of many voices in the indigenous struggle against the environmental racism that permeates the policies of extractive resource interests.
Protect Our Manoomin’s role includes opposing mining legislation that endangers our manoomin and the ecosystem of northern Minnesota; and to educate and inform Anishinaabe communities of the imperilment of nonferrous mining. We are currently developing outreach programs and forums to bring awareness in our reservation communities.
